Little Women: A Christmas Without Presents

Adapted by Robin Proett Olson

Based upon the book by Louisa May Alcott

PRODUCTION HISTORY

The World Premiere production of this script was produced by the Orlando Repertory Theater.

SYNOPSIS

It is Christmas Eve and the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, are struggling to be grateful for what they have. Longing for their father, who is serving in the war, and worried about their mother, who never ceases to share what little she has with others, they vow to be the best Little Women they can.

This play follows their journey from bickering girls to loving sisters as Christmas Eve gives way to Christmas Day and the merry revels they create to entertain themselves.

What Makes This Version So Special

This heartfelt story by Louisa May Alcott was declaired an instant "classic" upon its' publication in 1868. Our charming stage adaptation is unique in two singular ways. The first is in the narration supplied by the actors and woven throughout the play. It allows the actors to break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience. In the original production, audiece members were used as characters and groups of people were invited to step on stage to watch the play-within-a-play that the March sisters perform.

The play-within-a-play is the other unique factor, showcasing the sisters' vocal and acting talent (and sometime the notable and comic lack thereof).

The Music

The music for the play-within-a-play is given to all producers as part of the production contract. This includes a demo CD with vocalists which may be distributed to your actors to assist them in learning the songs, and a Show CD with the accompaniment played on an old-sounding piano.
